The moment the boy walked onto the stage, everyone thought the same thing—cute, but probably not ready. He was tiny, maybe six or seven, and when he announced his song choice, Simon actually laughed out loud.
“Really?” Simon said, raising an eyebrow. “That one?”
The audience chuckled too. It sounded like a joke. A classic rock ballad sung by a first grader? No one expected anything more than a sweet, clumsy attempt.
Then the music started.
The boy closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and sang.
And everything stopped.
